The Old Man and The Sea
by Ernest Hemingway
Since we did not have a summer assignment, I am assigning this text so we can have a common text to start the year off. It is a novella (there aren't even chapters in this!) about a Cuban fisherman named Santiago who goes on his last fishing trip. This may seem like a simple story, but there is so much depth to it you may be surprised.
It is important that you do NOT try reading this short text in one day. Hemingway's writing is stark and detailed. This can come off as monotonous, almost boring...so make sure you read this over a period of time. You will have at least 2 weeks to read the novella before we start to actually use it in class. Below is a button for the text for this novella. Since this is so short, I decided to go through it and add in historical context, relevant images, and a couple scholarly notes that will help you. You will not have these in any other online pdf. Use the pdf, which will be better than the physical copy from the library. |
There are a couple pictures in the pdf from the newly published Hemingway Library edition of the text. The link is here. And since Amazon publishes the first chapters of books (but the novella is all one chapter), the entire text of the book is on the Amazon page.
