American Romanticism
This unit covers literature from 1800-the Civil War. This is a time of fictional short stories/novels, poetry, and the fight for civil rights, a fight that continues through the next units.
The Romanticism and Gothicism of this time period focuses on emotion, intuition, the perfection of the earth, and the attempt at perfecting the human being, so not only are we reading Romantic and Gothic authors (such as Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe), but Transcendentalist authors such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. With the world the way it is, it will hopefully be a breath of fresh air with an immersion in nature, the human psyche, and true civil disobedience. |
