American Masters
Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson are two of the best American poets for many reasons. They bridge the time periods of American Romanticism and Realism, utilizing techniques from both periods, and becoming symbols of both.
Walt Whitman experienced the Civil War firsthand and wrote on the suffering he witnessed there. He is known for his descriptive and honest language. He was one of the first internationally accepted accomplished American authors at a time when those outside of America viewed us as illiterate, backwoods, and unsophisticated people.
Emily Dickinson is known for her brief poems that pack in tremendous emotional impacts. He was isolated much of her life, writing letters to people rather than socializing in-person. While she never saw the Civil War herself, she knew people who fought on both sides and saw the impact war has on the people left behind.
