Frequently Asked Questions
I have had several questions about this assignment, so I will go through them here.
- Must we also write on the Introduction, Interludes, and Envoi?
- Yes. Those are part of Foster's exploration of literature.
- For the MLA format heading, what do we put for the class?
- For now, just put "AP English Literature" for that part of the heading. I don't even know which period I will have each of you.
- What do we do for the Works Cited page?
- The Work Cited page is really a Work Cited page because there should only be one source listed: this book. I want you to be in the habit of putting the source of your materials, even if we are all using the same book.
- If you have trouble with the entry, use www.easybib.com to help you.
- What about the second part? I'm not sure how to approach this.
- Chapter 27 provides more details into this part of the assignment. He provides a short story titled "The Garden Party" by Katherine Mansfield. On page 265, he goes into more detail about what an explication is.
- Essentially, for your essay, you are explaining the theme and what about the story showed you the theme, using the advice and information Foster gives in the rest of the book. Or as Foster says: "What does it signify?" and "How does it signify?" Just follow his instructions and go from there.
- Don't worry about being "right"--get that insecurity out of your head NOW!!!!!!! It won't help you in this course.
- Then, you are going to read the explications three of his students wrote (pages 266-276) and compare theirs to yours. What was different? Did you go into more detail? Did you address aspects of the text they didn't? If you and one of those students chose the same aspect, who addressed it more fully? Etc.
- Finally, answer the question: What can you do with your explications to make them better?
